Should You Use an AI Website Builder for Your Business?

AI website builders promise a professional-looking website in minutes. For small business owners, that can be appealing. But what if the money you save upfront costs you more customers down the road and slows growth?

A website can look great and still struggle to show up in Google, making it hard for customers to find what they need, or it can lose the search visibility your business has spent years building.

That doesn’t mean AI has no place in web design. But there’s a big difference between getting a website online and building one that actually works for your business.

So, is an AI-built website enough, or is professional web design worth the investment?

Can AI Really Understand Your Business?

AI website design tools can generate layouts, write content, and suggest design elements based on a few details about your business. They can’t automatically understand what makes your business different or what your customers actually want, especially at a local level.

Take a restaurant website, for example. Customers are probably looking for the menu, hours, upcoming events, or directions. If that information is buried behind an attractive homepage, the design isn’t doing them much good. A contractor’s website has different priorities. Someone searching for a specific service wants to know whether the company offers it, where they work, and how to request an estimate.

Professional web design starts with understanding those needs and using them to guide the website’s structure, content, and navigation. It also considers how people actually use the site, whether that’s finding information on their phones, comparing services, or deciding whether they’re ready to contact your business. An agency that has built hundreds of websites for regional businesses, such as Sera Group, has firsthand experience with what user experience and pages work best in a locale.

Research shows why that matters. In a 2025 study involving 42 participants, researchers compared an AI-generated design with one created by people. Participants generally found the human-designed version easier to understand and felt more confident using it. It’s a good example of why thoughtful design matters just as much as appearance.

That’s why our team starts by talking through your business goals, reviewing what’s already working, and identifying what your website needs to accomplish. This happens over a call or an in-person meeting where we get to know your business as if we were a customer. Those conversations help us make informed design decisions instead of simply starting with a template.

Can Replacing Your Website Hurt Your Google Rankings?

Yes. AI-built websites can rank in Google, but replacing an existing website without protecting what’s already working can significantly hurt your search visibility.

AI website builders may include basic search engine optimization (SEO) tools, but having those features available doesn’t mean your website has an effective SEO strategy. For local businesses, that means understanding what potential customers search for, creating useful content around those services, and ensuring search engines can access and understand the website. Often, AI builds a one-time solution rather than a system designed to update automatically as your website evolves. This quickly leads to mismatched, outdated content, and we see it often.

It’s especially important when replacing an existing site. If a redesign removes valuable content, changes important URLs, or overlooks redirects, your website can lose some of the visibility it’s already earned in Google. That could mean fewer people finding your business when they’re actively searching for the services you offer.

That’s why Google recommends carefully planning website migrations, preserving important URLs where possible, and monitoring performance after launching a replacement.

A professional redesign should account for what’s already bringing visitors to your website and look for opportunities to improve it, rather than simply replacing everything with something new.

What Could You Lose by Switching to an AI Website?

We’ve seen firsthand how much a business’s search visibility can change.

Sera Group previously designed and developed a website for a Northwest Indiana business that later moved to an AI-built website when the business ownership changed; a change of mindset by the new business owners was that AI would outperform the agency-built website. We were also genuinely curious about the real-world results, so we monitored the website’s performance after the switchover. When we reviewed its search performance, the numbers objectively showed a significant decline.

According to Semrush, the website’s estimated organic search traffic fell from 1,176 visits between June and September 2025 to just 260 during the same period in 2026.

That’s a nearly 78% decrease in estimated organic search traffic.

The website also lost significant visibility across Google’s search results. In May 2026, Semrush identified 138 keywords the website ranked for. By September, that number had dropped to 70, a nearly 50% decrease. It is also worth noting that even the keywords that did rank after the switch were for search terms that were not locally relevant to the business, but to a different business in a different city.

These figures show how much search visibility a business can lose when it replaces its website, especially with AI-generated content.

A replacement website might look more modern or be easier to manage, but those improvements won’t matter if fewer potential customers can find the business.

Where AI Website Builders Still Fall Short

AI can help with brainstorming, content development, and other tasks that make the design process more efficient. But relying on it to build an entire website without professional oversight has limitations.

A 2026 study from researchers at the University of Sydney examined designs generated using ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot. Even with detailed instructions, the tools struggled to create designs that met accessibility needs for people with vision limitations.

That’s a reminder that a website can look finished but still have problems that make it hard for some visitors to use.

If your website plays an important role in attracting customers or generating leads, an experienced team can plan, build, and test it to make a meaningful difference.

The best approach isn’t necessarily avoiding AI. It’s knowing where it can help and where human expertise is still needed.

Make Your Next Website Worth the Investment

Whether you’re building a website for the first time or replacing one you’ve had for years, look beyond the initial design. What pages are already bringing people to your business? Where are visitors leaving? Are customers finding the information they need, and is the website making it easy for them to contact you? You can answer these questions with the right tracking sources in place, which every website built by Sera Group includes.

Those questions should guide your next website project.
